St Patrick's Bridge - March 10 1923

It was Saturday night in Cork City when a group of young men were stopped at an army checkpoint on St Patrick's Bridge and one of them was shot dead.

25 year old Michael Hickey from Lord Edward Street, Limerick City, was making his way back to his hotel with his friends after a night out in Cork. This was a time of Civil War, the streets of the rebel city mixed with tension and unease. The Free State forces had checkpoints at key points across the city and Patrick's Bridge was one of them.

When Michael Hickey and his friends were ordered to halt at the Patrick's bridge checkpoint an exchange of words occurred, followed by a brief brawl between the soldiers and Hickey's group before a volley of shots scattered them all. Except for one, who lay dead from a single gunshot.

The Mercy Hospital.

Michael Hickey was shot in the shoulder and died instantly. His remains were brought to the Mercy Hospital. His friends claimed that when the gunshots scattered them, they regrouped on Patrick Street and went back to look for their friend who they found wrapped in his overcoat on the footpath on the bridge before he was taken to the Mercy Hospital.
